AR-15 iron sights: maintenance check before range day

Five minutes of inspection prevents most “my irons shifted” surprises. Use this checklist with any Picatinny flip-up set; values below that are product-specific come from the Ozark Armament FBUIS-B listing.

Pre-range checklist

  1. Clamps. Confirm each recoil lug is still in its Picatinny slot; snug with the included hex driver—firm, not stripped.
  2. Detents. Flip each sight up and down. Sticky pivots get a drop of light oil; mushy lockup means reseat the sight.
  3. Aperture. Set the rear to the aperture you plan to shoot; do not discover mid-string that you left the tiny hole in place for a carbine class.
  4. Dials. Note windage/elevation positions (photo or witness mark) so you can tell if something moved after travel.
  5. Optic clearance. Fold flat and shoulder the rifle with your optic on—no rubbing.
